Sensitive skin is characterised by heightened reactivity to environmental and product-based stimuli. It’s not just about redness or irritation; sensitive skin is more vulnerable to inflammation, dryness, and disruptions in the skin barrier function, causing breakouts as well as rosacea, flakiness and sore skin.
In fact, oily, dry, and even dehydrated skin can be sensitive as the underlying issue often lies in the skin's ability to maintain its protective barrier, which is crucial in preventing transepidermal water loss (TEWL) and defending against external aggressors.
From harsh cleansers to environmental triggers, stress and diet, sensitive skin can have many hidden causes.
Honey and beeswax are two natural, bio-active ingredients that offer scientifically proven benefits for sensitive skin, directly addressing the skin’s structural needs at a molecular level.
With proven antimicrobial, anti-inflammatory, and barrier-repairing properties, these ingredients have been used for centuries to support skin health.
Speaking from the heart

I felt deflated as I actually thought my skin was the problem not the products I was using!
I believed my skin was oily, break out prone and dull but not particularly sensitive until I realised that my breakouts, uneven texture, dullness and redness was due to a compromised skin barrier and that I had been stripping my skin rather than respecting it as sensitive.

Read on to discover why raw honey and beeswax help protect and heal our sensitive skins and a big thank you to our customers for sharing the transformation pictures used!
6 Ways Beeswax and Honey save Sensitive Skins
1. Supreme Hydration and Skin Barrier Healing

The skin’s barrier is its first line of defence against environmental aggressors and moisture loss. When this barrier is damaged or compromised, the skin becomes more sensitive and prone to irritation.
Raw honey, a natural humectant, works by attracting and binding water molecules from the environment into the skin. This not only helps with hydration but also enhances the skin's ability to retain moisture over time. Studies show that honey increases the skin’s water content, resulting in plumper, healthier skin.
Beeswax, is a non pore-clogging, occlusive agent that forms a protective layer over the skin. This breathable barrier prevents water loss and shields the skin from external irritants and pollutants, helping to repair and reinforce the skin’s natural barrier function. The combination of honey and beeswax supports the skin's healing process, making it more resilient to sensitivities.
2. Modulates Perimenopausal and Menopausal Skin Changes

During perimenopause and menopause, fluctuating hormone levels—particularly the decline in oestrogen—can significantly impact the skin. As oestrogen levels drop, the skin's collagen production decreases, leading to a loss of elasticity, thinning of the skin, and an increased likelihood of dryness and irritation. Additionally, decreased oestrogen causes a reduction in natural oils, making the skin more prone to dehydration and sensitivity.
Natural raw honey skincare plays a key role in addressing these skin concerns by offering both anti-inflammatory and hydrating properties. It has been shown to stimulate the production of key proteins in the skin, such as collagen and elastin, which helps combat the loss of elasticity and the thinning of skin that often accompanies menopause. Raw honey’s natural humectant properties also help attract and retain moisture, combating the dryness that frequently occurs as oestrogen levels decline. Read more about these skin changes here.
Furthermore, honey contains bioactive compounds like flavonoids and phenolic acids, which possess antioxidant properties that neutralise oxidative stress. Oxidative stress is heightened during menopause and can contribute to premature ageing and inflammation. By reducing oxidative damage, natural honey skincare can help prevent the degradation of collagen and elastin, supporting skin integrity and resilience during this transitional phase.
Beeswax complements raw honey by offering occlusive benefits that lock in hydration and protect the skin from external aggressors, reducing the risk of further irritation and dryness. Together, honey and beeswax provide an ideal combination for maintaining balanced, hydrated, and healthy skin during perimenopause and menopause.
Top tip: 'Bee' sure to layer in all the goodness from the hive to hydrate, moisturise and protect your skin.
Want to know my skincare routine? I start with my face mist, then on damp skin I gently cleanse with our beeswax cleansing balm. After rinsing I apply another couple of pumps of face spritz followed by our raw honey face oil, then I apply another layer of mist and follow this with our beeswax and raw honey face cream. Finally, I seal in all the goodness with another misting of spritz and a thin layer of our Sensitive Bee beeswax balm.
3. Helps shield Skin from Environmental Aggressors

Environmental stressors such as UV rays, pollution, and extreme weather conditions trigger oxidative stress, leading to skin damage and accelerated aging. Sensitive skin is especially vulnerable to these external factors, which can compromise the skin barrier and increase inflammation.
Beeswax has remarkable protective properties, acting as a natural breathable barrier (no Vaseline here!) against environmental pollutants. It helps to protect the skin from harmful particles in the air while allowing the skin to breathe.
Raw honey, rich in polyphenols and flavonoids, has antioxidant properties that help fight stress caused by UV exposure and pollution. Studies have shown that honey helps neutralise free radicals, preventing DNA damage and premature skin aging.
However, while honey and beeswax offer some protection, it’s critical to complement your skincare routine everyday with a natural broad-spectrum sunscreen (SPF 50 is preferred) as the last step in your routine. SPF is essential for protecting sensitive skin from UV damage and preventing exacerbated redness or irritation from sun exposure - plus it's never too late to start to protect and repair past sun damage!
4. Bio-Retinols and Natural Vitamin C—Gentle Yet Effective

Traditional 'anti-ageing treatments', such as retinoids and strong chemical exfoliants, can be too harsh for sensitive skin, leading to peeling, redness, and irritation. Raw honey and beeswax skincare provide a natural alternative that is both gentle and effective.
Our natural skincare contains bio-retinoids, such as raw honey, rosehip oil and carrot seed oil that naturally mimic the activity of synthetic retinol without the irritation. These natural compounds gently accelerate skin turnover, helping to improve skin texture and plump fine lines. Additionally, the raw honey and plant oils we use are rich in natural Vitamin C, an antioxidant that supports collagen production and promotes skin brightness, without the harsh effects of synthetic Vitamin A or C derivatives.
The gentle nature of honey and beeswax makes them perfect for sensitive skin that can’t tolerate harsher active ingredients, allowing you to experience the flow and plumping benefits without compromising your skin’s health
5. Calms Rosacea, Redness and Irritation

Rosacea, psoriasis and eczema are chronic inflammatory skin conditions that results in redness, visible blood vessels, acne-like breakouts, flaky dry and itchy skin.
These skin challenges are often triggered by environmental factors, stress, or hormonal changes, and those with sensitive skin are more likely to experience flare-ups.
Raw honey’s natural anti-inflammatory and antimicrobial properties make it a powerful ingredient for soothing rosacea and eczema-prone skin. Research has demonstrated that raw honey helps reduce erythema (redness) and calms inflamed skin. Its ability to promote wound healing also aids in calming the redness associated with rosacea and eczema.
Beeswax further supports this by providing a barrier to lock in moisture and protect the skin from external irritants that can trigger flare-ups, while still allowing the skin to breathe.

Imagine your skin as a protective wall, defending you from the outside world. But, if you have sensitive skin, your natural barrier is compromised, reacting to everything from harsh weather to skincare products. Over time, this constant exposure without protection, can lead to rosacea, where redness and visible blood vessels take hold.
But, here's the twist: rosacea itself can make our skin even more sensitive. The inflammation breaks down your skin's defences, causing more irritation, discomfort and premature skin ageing.
It's a vicious cycle. However with gentle soothing care, you can strengthen your skin barrier, calm the redness and stop rosacea from making your sensitive skin even more uncomfortable.

6. Gentle and Effective for Sensitive Eyes
The skin around the eyes is thinner and more sensitive than the rest of the face, which is why it’s often the first to show signs of irritation, dryness and ageing.
Harsh ingredients or chemical-based products can cause stinging or discomfort, making it difficult to find eye care that works to brighten depuff and smooth fine lines without irritation. I know for me, I have to be so careful what I pop around my eyes otherwise they end up sore, red and streaming! Strong creams are a definite no-no.
This is why so many of our sensitive skin ladies rely on our raw honey eye oil, our top selling Queen Bee under Eye, which is gentle, natural, non irritating and effective at brightening, plumping, nourishing and smoothing without irritation; for even the most sensitive eyes.
