With so many moisturisers everywhere, from supermarkets to high street chains, claiming to contain the latest trending ingredients or full of hyped up promises with prices ranging hugely, how are you meant to know where to start? Let’s help……
What makes an effective moisturiser?
If you are having difficulty finding a face cream that doesn't irritate, are struggling to see results from your current moisturiser or just don’t know which one out of the thousands to pick, here’s the ultimate checklist for you:
Key Questions to Ask
- Does it contain natural but effective ingredients? We want our moisturisers to be cruelty free, free from harsh ingredients, hormone disruptors and synthetic colours and fragrances but packed full of proven, effective natural alternatives.
- Is it water-based? A water-based formula ensures hydration. While oils are nourishing, a good moisturiser is vital for water based hydration.
- Are there gentle alternatives to harsh actives? Look for antioxidant-rich butters, waxes plant oils, and natural skin hydration enhancers such as honey and aloe vera.
- Is the ingredient list short and simple? Less is often more, more concentrated and more powerful to deliver results - long ingredients lists are more than often a sign of multiple preservatives and filler ingredients with no skin nutrient value.
-
Does it include all three vital ingredient types?
- Humectants (e.g. aloe vera, honey, hyaluronic acid) to attract and retain water.
- Emollients (e.g. plant oils, lipid-rich butters) to smooth and strengthen the skin barrier.
- Occlusives (e.g. beeswax, cocoa butter) to seal in moisture and protect against external irritants.
Our HBB moisturisers tick all these boxes, blending hydration, nourishment and protection, without harsh actives or synthetic additives.
What to Avoid in a Moisturiser
- Lengthy ingredient lists: a pared-back routine with simpler formulas is now favoured for respecting the skin's natural microbiome for healthier skin.
- Strong actives: especially problematic for dry, sensitive or compromised skin, they often disrupt the skin barrier and strip the skin of its natural glow.
- Synthetic chemicals and fragrances: these can cause inflammation of the skin and trigger irritation.
- Overpriced, overhyped products: a high-quality moisturiser needn’t cost more than £30. You are often paying for a name or celebrity endorsement if you chose an expensive moisturiser, not for the ingredients.
- Anti-ageing creams with harsh actives: while they promise miracles, no moisturiser can 'erase the signs of ageing' or 'reverse the clock' - rather they often disrupt your skin’s natural pH and microbiome, leading to irritation, dryness, inflammation and ,ironically, premature ageing of the skin.
11 Ways an Effective Moisturiser Benefits Your Skin
1. Prevents Premature Ageing

Signs of premature ageing such as like dullness, fine lines and wrinkles often result from dehydration and environmental stress. A water-based moisturiser keeps your skin hydrated, radiant, plump and protected, especially when paired with a daily SPF.
2. Ensures Better Skin as you Age
Natural ageing is inevitable but beautiful. With age, reduced oestrogen levels can cause dryness, sensitivity and thinning skin. A good moisturiser plumps, hydrates, and soothes, ensuring your skin stays supple, comfortable, fresh and plump, whatever your age.
3. Revives Dull Skin

Dehydration and a disrupted exfoliation process from lack of moisturisation often leads to dullness. Moisturisers enhance the skin’s natural ability to shed dead cells, ensuring a fresh, radiant complexion without the need for harsh exfoliants.
4. Strengthens the Skin Barrier

Our skin’s natural defences weaken with age, stress, pollution and diet. A moisturiser acts as a protective shield, replenishing moisture and fortifying the barrier to prevent irritation and help neutralise and protect against free radicals.
5. Balances Oily/Acne Prone Skin
Dehydrated skin can overcompensate by producing excess oil. A lightweight, non-comedogenic moisturiser hydrates without clogging pores, balancing oil production and calming inflammation.
Choose a non-comedogenic moisturiser with added antibacterial and anti-inflammatory ingredients like our combination skin face cream.
6. Relieves Dry Skin
Dry skin, skin lacking in natural oils, often feels itchy and rough. Daily moisturising replenishes the natural oils and hydrates, leaving skin soft, smooth, nourished and with an instant luminosity.
Our Bumble Bee cream is the one for you: beeswax forms a protective, breathable barrier on the skin while raw honey, purified water and essential oils work on supremely hydrating your skin.
7. Reverses Dehydrated Skin

Dehydrated skin lacks water, leading to tightness and fine lines. A water-based moisturiser infused with humectants replenishes moisture, restoring a plump, healthy complexion with the unmistakable 'lit from within' juicy, bouncy glow.
8. Provides Essential Oil Benefits

Our face creams incorporate essential oils for both mood and skin boosting benefits:
- Dry skin cream: rose and myrrh for hydration and brightness.
- Combination/oily skin cream: lavender and bergamot for anti-inflammatory, antibacterial effects.
- Sensitive skin cream: free of essential oils, it relies on raw honey and premium beeswax for natural soothing aromas.
9. Improves Rosacea

Redness and irritation from rosacea are eased by moisturising ingredients like beeswax, raw honey and gentle plant oils and butters, effective without the harshness, hotness and stinging brought on by many mainstream creams.
10. Soothes Sensitive Skin
Sensitive skin thrives on simplicity. Beeswax and raw honey based creams deliver anti-inflammatory, antioxidant, and antibacterial benefits, cocooning the skin without irritation.
If you haven’t found your sensitive skin BFF yet, consider paring back on ingredients and opting for our natural, fragrance free raw honey and beeswax Sensitive Bee Face Cream.
11. Pairs Perfectly with SPF

For optimal protection, layer a broad-spectrum SPF over your moisturiser. They perform different roles: while SPF shields the skin from UVA and UVB damage, moisturisers penetrate to hydrate and nourish. Combining them ensures maximum efficacy of both products so your skin is reaping the benefits of a great hydrating moisturiser and the non negotiable protection from a natural broad spectrum SPF.

Love the blog and thank you for explaining the reason for a separate SPF…I had not fully understood the relevance of it staying on the skin and not penetrating deeper.
Have a great weekend and I hope the weather is kind to you that you need extra spf protection 😂😊❤
