What happens to Your Skin when you start using a Daily Moisturiser

With so many moisturisers everywhere, from supermarkets to high street beauty shops, claiming to contain the latest trending ingredients or full of hyped up promises with prices ranging hugely, how are you meant to know where to start? Let’s help……

 What makes an effective moisturiser?

If you are having difficulty finding a face cream that doesn't irritate, are struggling to see results from your current moisturiser or just don’t know which one out of the thousands to pick, here’s the ultimate checklist for you:

Key Questions to Ask

  1. Does it contain natural ingredients?
  2. Is it water-based? A water-based formula ensures hydration. While oils are nourishing, a good moisturiser should hydrate your skin first.
  3. Are there gentle alternatives to harsh actives? Look for antioxidant-rich butters, plant oils, honey, and aloe vera.
  4. Is the ingredient list short and simple? Less is often more.
  5. Does it include all three vital ingredient types?
    • Humectants (e.g. aloe vera, honey, hyaluronic acid) to attract and retain water.
    • Emollients (e.g. plant oils, lipid-rich butters) to smooth and strengthen the skin barrier.
    • Occlusives (e.g. beeswax, cocoa butter) to seal in moisture and protect against external irritants.

Our HBB moisturisers tick all these boxes, blending hydration, nourishment, and protection without harsh actives or synthetic additives.

What to Avoid in a Moisturiser

  1. Lengthy ingredient lists: a pared-back routine with simpler formulas is now favoured for healthier skin.
  2. Strong actives: especially problematic for dry, sensitive or compromised skin, they often disrupt the skin barrier.
  3. Synthetic chemicals and fragrances: these can strip the skin and trigger irritation.
  4. Overpriced, overhyped products: a high-quality moisturiser needn’t cost more than £30.
  5. Anti-ageing creams with harsh actives: while they promise miracles, they often disrupt your skin’s natural pH and microbiome, leading to irritation, dryness, and inflammation.

11 Ways an Effective Moisturiser Benefits Your Skin

1. Prevents Premature Ageing

Signs like dullness, fine lines and deep wrinkles often result from dehydration and environmental stress. A water-based moisturiser keeps your skin hydrated, radiant, and protected, especially when paired with a daily SPF.

2. Ensures Better Skin as you Age

Natural ageing is inevitable but beautiful. With age, reduced oestrogen levels can cause dryness, sensitivity and thinning skin. A good moisturiser plumps, hydrates, and soothes, ensuring your skin stays supple and comfortable.

3. Revives Dull Skin

Dehydration and a disrupted exfoliation process often leads to dullness. Moisturisers enhance the skin’s natural ability to shed dead cells, ensuring a fresh, radiant complexion without the need for harsh exfoliants.

4. Strengthens the Skin Barrier

Our skin’s natural defences weaken with age, stress, pollution, and diet. A moisturiser acts as a protective shield, replenishing moisture and fortifying the barrier to prevent irritation.

 5. Balances Oily/Acne Prone Skin

Dehydrated skin can overcompensate by producing excess oil. A lightweight, non-comedogenic moisturiser hydrates without clogging pores, balancing oil production and calming inflammation.

Choose a non-comedogenic moisturiser like our combination skin face cream.

6. Relieves Dry Skin

Dry skin, lacking natural oils, often feels itchy and rough. Daily moisturising replenishes essential oils and hydration, leaving skin soft, smooth, and nourished.

Our Bumble Bee cream is the one for you: beeswax forms a protective, breathable barrier on the skin.

7. Reverses Dehydrated Skin

Dehydrated skin lacks water, leading to tightness and fine lines. A water-based moisturiser infused with humectants replenishes moisture, restoring a plump, healthy glow.

 8. Provides Essential Oil Benefits

Our face creams incorporate essential oils for both emotional and skin benefits:

  • Dry skin cream: rose and myrrh for hydration and brightness.
  • Combination/oily skin cream: lavender and bergamot for anti-inflammatory, antibacterial effects.
  • Sensitive skin cream: free of essential oils, it relies on honey and beeswax for natural soothing aromas.

9. Improves Rosacea

Redness and irritation from rosacea are eased by ingredients like beeswax, raw honey and rose essential oil, which calm and protect sensitive skin.

10. Soothes Sensitive Skin

Sensitive skin thrives on simplicity. Beeswax-based creams deliver anti-inflammatory, antioxidant, and antibacterial benefits, cocooning the skin without irritation.

If you haven’t found your sensitive skin BFF yet, consider paring back on ingredients and opting for our natural, fragrance free honey and beeswax Sensitive Bee Face Cream.

11. Pairs Perfectly with SPF

For optimal protection, layer a broad-spectrum SPF over your moisturiser. They perform different roles: while SPF shields the skin from UV damage, moisturisers penetrate to hydrate and nourish. Combining them ensures maximum efficacy.

Love the blog and thank you for explaining the reason for a separate SPF…I had not fully understood the relevance of it staying on the skin and not penetrating deeper.
Have a great weekend and I hope the weather is kind to you that you need extra spf protection 😂😊❤
